Marketing Strategies

New and experienced Native American small-business owners of southern Michigan and northern Indiana are encouraged to virtually attend "Marketing Strategies." This training is facilitated by Pokagon citizen and marketing expert Meahgan Pear. Meahgan is the National Marketing Director for BDO, the 5th largest accounting firm in the world. She has a passion for helping companies express their core values in a creative way and is honored to be a part of the first PEG webinar series.

Creating A Business Plan

All good businesses begin with a solid business plan. Business plans guide business owners through each stage of starting and managing a business. This training is co-facilitated by Monica King and Austin Dean, both of DWH, LLC. DWH is a subsidiary of Waseyabek Development Corporation and the Nottawaseppi Huron Band of Potawatomi Indians.

Monica currently serves as Managing Partner and Chief Executive Officer of DWH, LLC, where she manages the growth and direction of the firm’s Grand Rapids and Detroit offices.

Austin has over 10 years of experience in managerial consulting, operations, and venture finance. Austin enjoys working closely with business owners and staff to develop and implement strategic plans that drive growth and efficiency. 

Good Path Awards Ceremony

The virtual Good Path Awards will honor four members of the Pokagon community who positively contribute to making this world a better place. Each award recipient demonstrates leadership and conducts themselves in the manner of the Seven Grandfather Teachings (Humility, Bravery, Honesty, Wisdom, Truth, Respect, Love). The 2020 Good Path Award recipients are Majel DeMarsh for Lifetime Achievement, Kevin Daugherty for Outstanding Leadership, Jason Wesaw for Outstanding Artist Entrepreneurship, and Madolyn Wesaw for Outstanding Emerging Leader.

Emotional Intelligence: Part I

Emotional awareness is critical in leadership positions. Stressful situations can often bring about an emotional hijack and hinder productivity. Learn to recognize an emotional hijack and techniques on how to avoid them!

This training is facilitated by Michael Saurez, Training Manager for Four Winds Casino Resort. Michael has 8+ years of training experience in both course development and classroom training. He teaches over 35 classes and holds five specialty certifications, including MBTI and Developing the Leader Within You. He specializes in Emotional and Social Intelligence courses with emphasis on brain science. Michael received his Bachelor of Arts from Valparaiso University.

Native Artist Professional Development

The second installment on the PEG Webinar Series features the First Peoples Fund (FPF). FPF educators will provide tribal artists professional development training. Artists will learn how to create a portfolio, reach their audience, market their art, price their art, apply for grants and more! This training is designed for emerging and professional artists alike. 

Business Financials

In this training, small business owners will develop fundamental skills necessary in managing small business finances. By the end of this training, business owners will have a solid foundation in financial statements, data analysis, and investor reports.
 
This training is facilitated by David A Fleming Sr (Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibway).  David primarily works in the Native American community development finance and small business management sector. David has extensive experience in tribal business, entrepreneur development, Native small business loan funds, and artist professional development. David currently manages the tribal portfolio of retail businesses for his tribe and is an adjunct business professor at the Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe Community College.

Small Business Panel Discussion

Three current Potawatomi small-business owners, John Pigeon (Black Ash Basket Maker & Cultural Presenter), Julie Farver (Quilted Oak Leaf Fabric and Quilt Shop) and Paul Gettig (Michiana Sanitation Specialist) are interviewed to get insight on experiences in small business ownership. New and potential small business owners are encouraged to participate. Opportunity will be provided for registrants to ask their own questions as well.

In the second EI class, participants learn the four premises of Emotional Control, that events are neutral, and that we each have control over how we react and feel.
